Come along with me on a day in the life of an indie author! As an independent author, I’m not just a writer; I’m also an entrepreneur. I have to wear many different hats to get my work out there. In this post, I want to share my experiences of balancing my business side, my creative side and family life as an independent author.
As soon as I wake up, I grab a cup of coffee or tea and drop the kiddos off at school. Once I’m home, I usually eat a small breakfast while I check my emails and messages. As an authorpreneur, I know that networking and engagement with my readers is key to success, so I take the time to respond to messages and comments on my social media platforms. I try to limit this to an hour in the morning, otherwise the day can run away from me!
After getting caught up on social media, I shift gears and start working on my current writing project. I’m not ready to share the specifics of this new series I’m working on, but I’m very excited to share it with you in the future. This is the part of my day where the real magic happens! I get lost in my writing, crafting characters and weaving plots, and the hours just fly by!
But as much as I love the creative side of my job, I know that I have to switch back to my business hat to keep my writing career thriving. So, I set aside some time in the afternoon to focus on marketing and creating Social Media Content. Today, I’m brainstorming new and creative ways to start promoting my up-and-coming book release, and I have a few tricks up my sleeve to make it stand out.
Usually by now it’s time to pick up the kiddos and run them around to whatever social or extracurricular activities are on the schedule, before it’s time to go home and have dinner and help my daughters with their homework or chill out with a family movie.
Once per week, I try to connect with another author or entrepreneur so we can motivate each other and discuss marketing strategies, share tips, and offer support. It’s a great way to connect with like-minded individuals and learn new things. Sometimes my work can be solitary, and I find this weekly interaction to be an integral part of my process.
At the end of the day, I’m exhausted but happy. Balancing the creative and business sides of my job with my most important job of being a mother, can be challenging, but it’s all worth it when I see my books reach new readers and receive positive reviews. Being an indie author isn’t just a job, it’s a lifestyle. I’m grateful to be able to do something I love every day and share it with others who feel the same way.
I hope you enjoyed this sneak peek into my life, if you have any other tips for a work at home mom, please post them in the comment section.
Your friend in motherhood,
Rachel V.
